Carolyn Cowper is an Alabama native and multidisciplinary creative dedicated to creating work with purpose and heart. Cowper received a BFA from The University of Alabama (2021) and is currently based in Dothan, Alabama.
"In my studio practice, I typically approach each piece with varying surface preparation, scale, and materiality. Approaching each separate piece with this puts me in an ethereal realm of uncertainty throughout the creative process. This subsequently steers me to less-conventional experimentation with methodology, often veering in a contrary direction than what was originally put down. That is when this remarkable 'thing' takes over – I refer to it as this 'brilliant moment of clarity' – when I realize I am no longer in control and that something forcibly separate or higher has taken over. I habitually refer to this as making “difficult” art in that its experience with me in the flesh has been personified as difficult, both in time and in the creative process. I do not limit myself regarding to color or material.
In my graphic design practice, I approach each project with a similar attitude of creative uncertainty. My work is constantly changing, and I fuss over it a lot – similar to that in the studio. Through use of typography, color, and texture, it allows me to express an idea in a visually appealing way that not only provides information but allows the viewer to retain the information in a clever, humorous, and even audacious way. In my practice, I use various tactics including humor, enigmatic approaches, and valiantness in order to bridge the gap between the creator, the piece, and the viewer. I am dedicated to crafting work with purpose and heart."
